Keeping a clear view in winter

Enlarged VDI 6032 focuses on automotive cabin air filters

Winter is coming and the cold, wet days will bring with them the typical effects familiar to all motorists: fogged windows, poor visibility and musty odors. Other things to be aware of include invisible pollutants such as bacteria, spores or particulate matter. The cause of these adverse effects and the potential risks they bring is often cabin air filters that are overdue for replacement. This issue is what Part 1 of the VDI 6032 guidelines aims to address.

In May 2015, a new version of the VDI 6032 Part 1 guidelines, “Air technology and air quality in vehicles – ventilation hygiene requirements” was published. It is based on the experiences of air quality in buildings and the existing VDI 6032 and, as an extension of the previous guidelines, concentrates on the ventilation technology used in passenger vehicles. “More timely and more targeted measures” for vehicle maintenance are intended to ensure hygiene in the car as well. This includes the regular replacement of automotive cabin air filters – an aspect that is still not observed by many motorists, or even simply ignored. This is a mistake.

Clear objective: Protecting people and vehicle assemblies

If cabin air filters stay in the system too long as a result of delayed replacement, air conditioning systems can become veritable bacteria breeding grounds and a health hazard to the vehicle occupants. On the other hand, if micronAir filters are used in the vehicle, the ventilation system provides reliable protection: not only against microorganisms, germs, mold spores or particulate matter, but also from the musty odors and fogged windows typical of the dank season. This is because road dust and other particles are deposited on the inside of the windows, which then hold moisture and thus increasingly restrict visibility. Clear message: change filters regularly

In general terms, an automotive cabin air filter needs to filter between ten and 150 liters of incoming air per second. Over time, the filter becomes clogged and the supply of fresh air decreases. Regular exchange is therefore essential to meet the hygiene requirements. This point is elaborated in Part 1 of the VDI 6032 guidelines. Clear instructions on this point have been around for ages. Both the Automobile Club of Germany (AvD) and the German Allergy and Asthma Federation (DAAB) recommend changing filters once a year or every 10,000 km.
